Gaustafallet, Jämtland – Exploring Sweden

Gaustafallet is an impressive waterfall just south of the Stekenjokk plateau along Vildmarksvägen, the Swedish Wilderness Road. It lies in Strömsund Municipality in the northern parts of Jämtland County. The Gauste River continues into a deep canyon after the waterfall. This waterfall has also been the filming location for a film based on a book by Astrid Lindgren. It was a scene in the 1980s film about Ronia, the Robber’s Daughter that was filmed here.


Things to Do and See

It is easy to miss this mighty waterfall when driving along past along the Swedish Wilderness Road. There are just a few smaller parking pockets along the road near Gaustafallet. It is the waterfall that is the main sight and it is located just a short walk from the road. Through the woods, the canyon is soon visible. There is a small path along the canyon with a protective fence. The path will take up along the edge and up towards the top of the fall.


How to Get to Gaustafallet

  • Flights: The nearest airports are Vilhelmina Airport (VHM) and Åre Östersund Airport (OSD)
  • Car: Gaustafallet is located along the Vildmarksvägen, the Wilderness Road. These are rural roads to the west of Vilhelmina, towards the border with Norway.
