Askersby, Närke – Exploring Sweden

Askersby is a small locality that together with its church once was the center of the Asker Parish. It is in Örebro Municipality in Örebro County, in a region that was once the historical province of Närke. The locality has today a population of around 250 inhabitants, mostly living in one-family homes. The surrounding area consists mostly of farmland.

A Short History of Askersby

Asker Parish has its origins in the Middle Ages and once had a medieval stone church. The current church in Askersby dates to 1766. The parish and its church were at the center of social and religious life in the parish until the Swedish Municipal Reform of 1862. This was when the parish’s responsibilities were split between the local government of Asker Municipality and the church congregation. Asker Municipality became in 1971 a part of Örebro Municipality. The church congregation is since 2022 a part of the Asker-Lännes Congregation.

Things to Do and See

Askerby is in the middle of farmland, which means that there are some nice views of the Swedish countryside. At its center stands the large stone church that watches over the local inhabitants. The locality itself consists mostly of small one-family homes, so it is predominantly the surrounding nature that is open for exploration.

Asker Church

Asker Church was completed in 1766 and its tower was built in 1858. It is a grey stone church that was renovated as late as 2017. This is one of three churches making up the Asker-Lännäs Congregation, the two others being the churches of Breven and Lännäs.

Olles Hage Nature Reserve

Olles Hage is a small nature reserve with hiking trails and areas for picnics. Nature here has been left mostly untouched for around 50 years and has a rich biodiversity of birds and insects.
