Bråfalls Såg, Södermanland – Exploring Sweden

Bråfalls Såg is an old sawmill within the estate of Nynäs Castle in Nyköping Municipality in Södermanland County. The sawmill lies within the Nynäs Nature Reserve, one of the largest nature reserves in Södermanland. Bråfalls Såg is one of many good entry points to the reserve and here you can find both parking, wind shelter, as well as an historical sight in the sawmill itself.

A Short History of Bråfalls Såg

The sawmill’s main purpose over the centuries has been to provide lumber for the nearby estate of Nynäs Castle. There has been a sawmill here as early as 1678, maybe even earlier. The sawmill has been powered by the nearby stream, but it has been limited by the access to water. It has mainly been used in the spring when the snow has been melting, resulting in about a month of usage each year. The sawmill was in use up until the 1940s.

Things to Do and See

The area offers a historical cultural landscape that might have one main sight, but it acts as an access point to so much more within the Nynäs Nature Reserve.

Bråfalls Såg

The old sawmill still stands and its interior is well preserved. The building might not look like much from a distance, it is almost camouflaged in this kind of landscape. It is, however, an interesting place to explore and the surrounding nature creates a beautiful scenery.

Nynäs Nature Reserve

Nynäs Nature Reserve is one of the largest ones in Södermanland. It was established in 1971 and covers an area of 3830 hectares of both forests, fields, lakes and cultural landscapes such as Bråfalls Såg.
