Skederid, Uppland | Exploring Sweden

Skederid is a parish and a church village in Norrtälje Municipality, located in Stockholm County, Sweden. It is situated in the historic province of Uppland. The area is part of the wider Roslagen region. The modern statistical locality (småort) centered around the church is officially named Rösa, Sättra och Råbro, and has a population of approximately 270 residents. Skederid is located in a rural landscape, about 15 kilometers west of the town of Norrtälje.

The character of Skederid is that of a classic Swedish church village (kyrkby). Its identity is centered around its medieval church, which has been the heart of the parish for centuries. The surrounding area is a quiet, rural community, consisting of scattered farms and residential houses. The parish is also historically significant as the birthplace of Saint Bridget of Sweden, one of the country’s most important saints. This historical connection, combined with the typical Uppland landscape of mixed forests and open agricultural fields, gives the area its specific character.

A Short History of Skederid

The history of Skederid is that of a medieval parish that has been the administrative and religious center for the surrounding agricultural community for over 800 years. Its development reflects the long history of settlement in the Roslagen region, from the Viking Age to the present day. The parish’s most significant historical claim is its connection to Saint Bridget of Sweden, which made it a key location in Swedish medieval history. This legacy exists alongside its long and stable history as a rural community.

A Medieval Parish

The history of settlement in the Skederid area is long, with several rune stones from the Viking Age found within the parish boundaries. Skederid Parish (socken) was established in the Middle Ages. The first stone church on the site was built in the late 13th century. This church became the religious and administrative center for the surrounding farms. During the 14th century, the parish was the home of the noble family to which Saint Bridget (Heliga Birgitta) belonged. Her father was the lawspeaker of Uppland, and the family’s seat was at Finsta Manor within the parish.

Modern Era

For centuries, Skederid remained a small, rural parish. Its character did not change significantly until the administrative reforms of the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1862, the responsibilities of the old parish were divided between the new civil municipality and the church congregation. Skederid was later part of the larger Rimbo Rural Municipality (landskommun) before the final municipal reform in the 1970s made it part of Norrtälje Municipality. In the modern era, the area has remained a quiet residential and agricultural community, with many residents commuting to the larger towns in the region, while the site of Saint Bridget’s birth has continued to be a place of interest.
