Grödinge Kyrkby, Södermanland – Exploring Sweden

Grödinge Kyrkby is a small settlement in the historical province of Södermanland in eastern Sweden, today a part of Botkyrka Municipality in Stockholm County. The church here was once the center of social and religious life in the parish. The parish once covered an area that today includes parts of the locality Tumba.


A Short History of Grödinge Kyrkby

Grödinge Parish was established during the Middle Ages and its church dates back to the 12th century. The parish was in operation until the Swedish Municipal Reform of 1862. This was when its operations were split between the local government of Grödinge Municipality and the church congregation. Grödinge Municipality became a part of Botkyrka Municipality in 1971. In regards to the church congregation, Grödinge Kyrkby, and its church are still a part of Grödinge Congregation.

Grödinge Church

Grödinge Church is at the center of Grödinge Kyrkby. It is a white stone church from the 12th century. The church has seen several alterations over the centuries but has stayed as the main church of the parish and later the Grödinge Congregation. It is today a part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden.
