Sättersta, Södermanland – Exploring Sweden

Sättersta is a settlement, church, and former parish in Nyköping Municipality in Södermanland County. This is the countryside of eastern Sweden with farmland and forests all around. The settlement lies right along what was once the main road through this part of Sweden, the road known as the old E4. The new E4 is a highway that goes a bit further to the south.

A Short History of Sättersta

Sättersta Parish had its origins in the Middle Ages and its stone church is believed to date back to the 12th or 13th century. The parish was in operation up until the Swedish Municipal Reform of 1862. This was when the parish’s responsibilities were split between the new Sättersta Municipality and the church congregation. The municipality was in 1952 incorporated into Tystberga Municipality, which in turn became a part of Nyköping Municipality in 1971. The Church congregation is since 2002 a part of the Tystbergabygden Congregation.

The road known as Riksväg 1, or “Riksettan“, was the main road between Helsingborg and Stockholm between 1945 and 1962. Its name was replaced by the E4 in 1962. The old route of the road went through Sättersta which made it possible to establish small businesses in the area to service the drivers and the cars. The old road through the area was replaced by the new E4 in 1973.
