Femöre, Södermanland – Exploring Sweden

Femöre is a peninsula just south of Oxelösund in the historical province of Södermanland. This was once home to the coastal battery of Femöresfortet but is today mostly a nature area open for the public to enjoy. Once the view of the Baltic Sea is not enough, this peninsula is also a popular stop for waffles.


A Short History of Femöre

Femöre has for a long time been a scarcely populated peninsula. Its lighthouse opened in 1867 and included a homestead for its keeper and his family. The lighthouse had its keepers until 1955 when it was automated and finally decommissioned in 1972.

The Swedish Army eventually replaced the lighthouse keeper The coastal defense of Femörefortet was completed in 1964. It included several coastal artillery pieces that are still visible today. This was supposed to be the defense of Oxelösund and its important harbor and steel plant. A purpose that it served up until it was decommissioned in 2003.


Things to Do and See

The peninsula is a recreational area with endless possibilities to enjoy what nature has to offer. It is also rather famous for Skärgårdsvåfflan, a small cafe that has specialized in waffles.

Femöre Nature Reserve

A large part of the peninsula is covered by the 235 hectares large nature reserve. It was established in 2006 and has several paths for hiking and several cliffs that are great for swimming.

Femörefortet

Femörefortet is the former coastal artillery. It has been a museum since 2003 but was before that an important part of the Swedish defense with an objective to defend the harbor. It is today possible to walk along the cliffs and see the massive guns still standing here.

Femöreshuvud

Femöreshuvud is the location of the lighthouse. It was established in 1867 when the first lighthouse keeper Johan Julius Jansson started his position here. It is today a picturesque area with the old homestead and other buildings. The lighthouse was in use up until 1972, but the keeper was no longer needed after 1954.

Femöre Gästhamn

There is a fairly large marina on the peninsula. It is a former fishing harbor that has become the main marina for visiting pleasure vessels for the town of Oxelösund. It also includes parking for motor homes as well as other simple accommodations.


How to Get to Femöre

  • Flights: Stockholm Skavsta Airport (NYO) is 24 kilometers to the north.
  • Car: Gemöre is at the end of the smaller roads that end south of Oxelösund.
  • Bus: Buses from Sörmlandstrafiken connect nearby Oxelösund with the surrounding region.
