Rimbo, Uppland – Exploring Sweden

Rimbo is a locality in Norrtälje Municipality in Stockholm County. It is a former railway junction that today has around 5.200 inhabitants. Even without the railway, it is today still a regional center between the town of Norrtälje and the Capital Stockholm.

A Short History of Rimbo

Rimbo has its origins in the former parish that shares its name. The parish dates to the Middle Ages and the area was for a long time a marketplace.

The modern locality began its development with the railway at the end of the 19th century. The railway connecting Norrtälje with Uppsala opened in 1884 with a station in Rimbo. It was extended in 1885 with a line to Stockholm and in 1898 with a line to Hallstavik. In the middle of these lines was the settlement near the Rimbo Parish Church that began developing around the railway junction. Many of the railways began to be decommissioned in the 1960s and the last line was canceled in 1981.

Rimbo Parish was with the Swedish Municipality Reform of 2862 replaced by the new civic government of Rimbo Municipality and the church congregation. In 1952, the municipality was incorporated into Sjuhundra Municipality. Rimbo Municipality was reinstated for a short time in 1967 before it became a part of Norrtälje Municipality in 1971.
