Mogata, Östergötland – Exploring Sweden

Mogata is a locality in the historical province of Östergötland in eastern Sweden. It is today a part of Söderköping Municipality in Östergötland County. This is a settlement that has grown around the local parish church and has today around 300 inhabitants.

A Short History of Mogata

Mogata Parish has its origins in the Middle Ages. The name was in the 14th century spelled Mogatu and refers to a road. The first church is believed to have been built in the early 13th century. It was demolished in 1842 when it was replaced by the current church. The new church was completed two years later.

With the municipal reforms of 1862, the local government was separated from the church. This established Mogata Municipality and Mogata Congregation. The municipality was independent until 1952 when it was incorporated into Stegeborg Municipality. The new larger municipality would, however, already 1974 be incorporated into Söderköping Municipality.

Things to Do and See

This might be a small locality, but there is a historical feeling around the old square with the church and courthouse on either side. The surrounding area consists of farming landscapes and smaller forests. For anyone looking for excursions, it is not far from the old town of Söderköping and the Göta Canal. There is also the historical castle ruin at Stegeborg to be explored in the east.

Mogata Church

Mogata Church was inaugurated in 1844. It replaced an older church from the Middle Ages. Not everything was lost from the former church, its clock tower is supposed to have been reused for the new church. The new church is today a part of Söderköping S:t Anna Congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden.

The Courthouse

The Courthouse, or Tingshuset in Swedish, is one of the most historical buildings in Mogata. It was built at the end of the 17th century and was completed in 1705. It was used for the Hammarkind hundred, comprising several of the surrounding parishes.
