Östra Husby, Östergötland – Exploring Sweden
Welcome to the Swedish countryside! Östra Husby is a locality in Norrköping Municipality in Östergötland County. It lies on the peninsula Vikbolandet, just east of the city of Norrköping. This locality was once the seat of the local parish with the church in its center. Today around 880 people live in the area around the church.
A Short History of Östra Husby
The parish had its origins in the Middle Ages and the first church here is believed to have been built in the 12th century. The current church replaced the previous one in the 19th century. It was also in the 19th century a new local government and the church congregation replaced the parish. This was with the Swedish Municipal Reform of 1862 where the parish responsibilities were split between the local government of Östra Husby Municipality and the church congregation. The municipality existed until 1952 when it was incorporated into Östra Vikbolandet Municipality with in turn became a part of Vikbolandet Municipality in 1967. The area is since 1974 a part of Norrköping Municipality. In regards to Östra Husby Congregation, it still exists and has been expanded since its creation.
Things to Do and See
The small center consists of a gas station, a small ICA grocery store, and other local services Like in every small Swedish locality, there is a local pizzeria. All the sights notwithstanding, it is still the church that is the most prominent building around here.
Östra Husby Church
Östra Husby Church is a white stone church that was inaugurated in 1809. The church replaced an older medieval church but has saved parts of the former church’s interior. The church is today a part of Östra Husby Congregation within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden.
