Lästringe Kyrka is a medieval church in Nyköping Municipality in Södermanland County. This was once the center of social and religious life for the surrounding countryside. Today it is a white stone church next to the highway, the E4, in eastern Sweden. A few kilometers away is the settlement of Lästringe. The settlement is the result of a train station and a new settlement sharing the name with the parish being established along the railway when it opened in 1913.
A Short History of Lästringe Kyrka
Lästringe Parish has its origins in the Middle Ages and its church dates back to the 12th century. Lästringe Kyrka was the seat of the parish, which was in operation until the Swedish Municipal Reform of 1862. This was when the parish’s responsibilities were split between the local government of Lästringe Municipality and the church congregation. The new municipality was in 1952 incorporated into Tystberga Municipality, which in turn became a part of Nyköpings Municipality in 1971. The congregation is since 2002 a part of the Tystbergabygden Congregation.
Things to Do and See
This is the countryside of Södermanland with small roads along the fields and forests. The church is standing on a small hill with the highway on one side and the former main road through the area on the other. It is joined by the old school building from the 1840s that is currently housing the Blombergska School.
Lästringe Kyrka was inaugurated in the 12th century and is a white stone church with an external clock tower. The last major addition was the sacristy which was built in 1699. The church is today one of the churches making up the Tystbergabygden Congregation within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden.
