Lästringe Kyrka, Södermanland – Exploring Sweden

Lästringe Kyrka is a medieval church in Nyköping Municipality in Södermanland County. This was once the center of social and religious life for the surrounding countryside. Today it is a white stone church next to the highway, the E4, in eastern Sweden. A few kilometers away is the settlement of Lästringe. The settlement is the result of a train station and a new settlement sharing the name with the parish being established along the railway when it opened in 1913.

A Short History of Lästringe Kyrka

Lästringe Parish has its origins in the Middle Ages and its church dates back to the 12th century. Lästringe Kyrka was the seat of the parish, which was in operation until the Swedish Municipal Reform of 1862. This was when the parish’s responsibilities were split between the local government of Lästringe Municipality and the church congregation. The new municipality was in 1952 incorporated into Tystberga Municipality, which in turn became a part of Nyköpings Municipality in 1971. The congregation is since 2002 a part of the Tystbergabygden Congregation.
