Warsaw, Poland | A Multi-Country Adventure

I have visited Warsaw several times, and many of these visits took place in 2024. So did this multi-country adventure. I love the possibility of day trips, even better when these trips include a border crossing or a flight. During the spring of 2024, I did something similar. Then I had Warsaw as a base and visited both Lublin in Eastern Poland and Bergamo in northern Italy. This time it was two other cities. Radom, a city just to the south of Warsaw and the Italian Capital Rome.

A Morning Flight to Warsaw

I had a lot planned for a few days in Warsaw. But first I had to drive to Stockholm Skavsta Airport for my Wednesday morning flight down to Poland. There might not be many flights from this small airport. However, I intend to make the best of it. I use all the opportunities I can find by having an airport just 30-minute drive from home. The flight was, as always, uneventful. Wizz Air might not be the most comfortable airline, but as long as they have affordable flights from Skavsta I’m happy.

Grey November Days in Warsaw

Warsaw in November is usually a quite gray story. This trip was no exception. Grey, dark, foggy, and cold. Those four words probably best describe my first two days of this trip. Yes, I got to enjoy Warsaw, but it was mostly done with shorter walks. A few visits to the shopping center, enjoying some nice food, and getting some rest. That is sometimes quite nice as well. But mostly, I was looking forward to my Friday Adventure to Rome.

A Day Trip to Rome

Being able to do cross-country day trips is in my opinion really fascinating. I love the possibility to do these. I was able to do these earlier with flights between Stockholm Skavsta and Gdansk. But now I have travel further for the opportunity. This meant that when I finally was in Warsaw, I made sure to find a day trip to Italy and its capital.

Yes it was an early flight, but the after some sleep on the plane and arriving in the sunshine of Italy? Let’s just say that I felt quite refreshed when getting on the train from Rome Fiumicino Airport to the Roma Termini train station in the center of the city. It is something to wake up in Warsaw and then a few hours later be strolling around in central Rome. I had one direction set for this stroll. I was heading towards the Colosseum.

Colosseum was only one of several sights I passed by during this stroll. No, I didn’t enter due to quite long queues. But I enjoyed the views. The Colosseum was followed by Circus Maximus, the River Tiber, and eventually the Vatican City. Heading back across the river for a pizza and apparently a nice discussion with a couple from Wisconsin. That was followed by the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain, and the Spanish Steps. Well, it was a dry Trevi Fountain. What I cannot understand is how I eventually strolled my way from the park Villa Borghese all the way back to the Colosseum.

Well, this day in the sunshine was really needed with the approaching winter in Sweden. I had saved up a lot of energy in the sunshine as I say down on the train back to the airport. Just a few hours later and I was back in the cold climate of Warsaw, getting a taxi back to my rented apartment.

Resting in Warsaw

A Friday walking around Rome soon turned into a Saturday resting in Warsaw. My clock kept reminding me that I had a new record from the day before. Apparently the clock had never recorded that many steps before. One thing was for sure. I was not going to beat it this Saturday. I made sure to rest and plan a new trip for the next day instead. Just taking short walks and filling up on energy. Warsaw was windy and cold, but it had gotten better compared to when I arrived.

A Day Trip to Radom

Rome was not the only day trip during this adventure. It might have been the only excursion done by flying abroad. This Sunday I did instead, head to Warszawa Centralna, the train station. It was time to go a bit to the south. Almost exactly an hour south with the train is the town of Radom. A town that apparently was destroyed by Swedish forces in 1656, leaving only 37 houses standing.

Radom Główny train station is just a short walk from the city center. My focus was going to be along the main pedestrian streets, the Stefana Żeromskiego and the Rwańska. It is a cozy small town, but on a cold November Sunday it was not many people out and about. Still nice to just stroll around in a new town, eating a hamburger at a local restaurant for lunch, and then going back to Warsaw in the afternoon. Would I recommend going to Radom? Probably not, unless you are as crazy as me and want to visit just for the sake of it. That doesn’t mean that it is not worth visiting. It is all about what you are looking for. It was time to head back to Warsaw and prepare for an early morning flight back to Sweden.

A Early Morning Flight Back Home

Call me crazy, but what don’t I do for a cheap flight? Well, the issue with these trips to Warsaw is that the flight back to Stockholm Skavsta Airport is actually the first flight in the morning from Warsaw Chopin Airport. Yes, the first flight! That meant that I checked out of the apartment before 3 AM to be in time for my 05:50 flight. The good thing with such an early flight? I was able to get back to my home office in time for a full day of work.
