Radom, Poland | A Day Trip from Warsaw

One of the best things with traveling is to get to explore new places. With Warsaw as a base there are several smaller towns reachable by train for a day trip. After a few cold days in Warsaw and an amazing day trip to Rome, I decided for something smaller for my last full day of this trip to Poland. This day it was time for a train ride south. To the small town of Radom. A town I did now nothing about. Well, with the exception that I just had learned that the town was destroyed by Swedish soldiers in 1656.

Taking the Train from Warszawa Centralna

I didn’t take the first train in the morning. Instead I stood in front of Warszawa Centralna at 9 AM, heading inside to buy my ticket to Radom. The train station is quite easy to navigate. Just downstairs from the main hall and I was able to get the tickets and find the platform. I had an hour on the train to look forward to as I sat down a few minutes later.

A Day Exploring Radom

Once I arrived in Radom, I was faced with my usual problem. Which direction to walk? Memorizing a map is easy, setting the compass pointing north is harder without a compass. Luckily the entrance of the train station was facing the city center. That has not always been the case when traveling in Poland.

Radom is an old town with a long history. It has had times of prosperity, but also difficult times such as during the Swedish occupation in the 17th century. It does require some detective work to find traces of the historical past. When walking along the main pedestrian street of Stefana Żeromskiego and the nearby street of Rwańska you get a feeling of the mid-20th century. It is when finding the remaining traces of the city wall that some signs of history began to emerge. Apparently there are more places to find, such as the old medieval stronghold of Piotrówka. Sadly out of my knowledge during my visit. Well, maybe there will be a new opportunity in the future.

My walk took me along the streets in the center of town. Just strolling around is a possibility also in smaller towns. I did eventually end up at a hamburger restaurant for a very late lunch. My strolling around in Radom was coming to an end with the hamburger.

Back to Warsaw

The cold and humid weather of the earlier days in Warsaw started to find its way back in the afternoon. The temperature dropped in Radom and I started to consider going back to Warsaw. It didn’t take long after I had left the restaurant before I set course towards the train station. It was time to get back to Warsaw and prepare for the early morning flight back to Sweden.
