Souk El Had of Agadir | Morocco 2025 (4/8)

It was time for a calm day in Agadir after our Mini Sahara excursion the day before. It was our third full day in Morocco and we still had a lot to explore in the area around our hotel. This was the day we explored the huge Souk El Had, visited an argan oil factory, and my ladies got to visit a Moroccan hairdresser. The last one seems to have been an adventure all by itself.

A Trip to Souk El Had

After sleeping in and having a late breakfast we did eventually get going to have a smaller adventure. We took a taxi to Souk El Had, which was just a short drive away. This souk is according to online sources one of the largest souks in Morocco, if not even the largest. We entered at the southwestern corner and were greeted by the many stands selling vegetables and other food items in a large covered hall. It was first when walking a bit further in that we really entered the maze of small businesses selling close to everything imaginable. Well, with a big focus on cheap clothes. Many international brands could be seen in these shops, but it seems highly unlikely that much would be anything else than counterfeits.

At least we found a few replacements for things that we had forgotten back at home. I got a new cap, and both Susann and I got new pairs of flip flops so that we had something easy to wear to the pool. Little A also got to do some shopping and we found a few more souvenirs. Outside the souk, there is the Mosque Ahl-e Iman adding to the scenery next to one of the entrances.

Argan Oil Factory

We decided to walk back from Souk El Had. Mainly to see some more of the city, but also to get some light exercise. Along the way we walked by one of the Argan Oil Factories. The argan tree is almost exclusive to Morocco and the oil from its fruits is used for everything from cooking to different kinds of skin treatments and cosmetics. The production method is both difficult and labor intensive, so these are no cheap souvenirs. Even though we didn’t buy anything, but it was interesting to learn more about Argan Oil. It is, after all, something very typical for this region of the world. Well, it was time for lunch and a visit to the swimming pool at the hotel.

A Visit to the Hairdresser

We spent most of the afternoon at the hotel. But Susann and Little A had arranged for one activity before dinner. They were both going to the hairdresser. That would really turn out to be an adventure by itself. Booking the time earlier in the day had been quite simple. In the end, it was completely different when we arrived. No one really knew what to do and English was at the time not the go-to language.

Little A and I headed back to the hotel for an hour while Susann had her hair colored and cut. Apparently there had been several men working on different parts of her hair while we were gone. One thing is for sure, I have no clue what had been done and couldn’t really tell the difference. Yes, I’m blind sometimes. It was also unclear weather or not Little A was going to get her hair cut as well. She really wanted to and was quite worried that it wouldn’t happen. Once she was pointed to the seat she was lightening up and she did eventually get her haircut. It took quite some time, but we did get the opportunity to relax and probably save quite a lot of money compared to getting it done in Sweden or on the Åland Islands.
