Korçë, often called the “City of Serenades,” stands as a vibrant cultural hub in southeastern Albania. Situated on a high plateau at approximately 850 meters above sea level, it enjoys a pleasant continental climate. A Short History of Korçë

The late 19th and early 20th centuries were crucial for Korçë. It became a significant center of the Albanian National Awakening (Rilindja Kombëtare). The first Albanian school, “Mësonjëtorja,” opened here in 1887. This landmark event was pivotal for Albanian education and national identity. Korçë also saw the establishment of the first girls’ school in Albania, “Shkolla e Vashave,” in 1891. The city was briefly an autonomous region under French administration (1916-1920) after World War I. This period fostered a unique blend of Albanian, French, and local influences. The communist era (1944-1991) brought significant industrialization and urban development. However, it also suppressed much of the city’s intellectual and religious freedoms. How to Get to Korçë

Driving presents a scenic route through improved roads. Buses offer an affordable and practical travel method. However, train travel to Korçë is not a viable option.

By Plane

Korçë does not have its own international airport. The closest major airport is Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza (TIA). This airport is also known as Rinas International Airport. Many airlines, including Wizz Air and Ryanair, offer direct flights to Tirana from various European cities. From Tirana, you can continue your journey to Korçë by bus or car. Ohrid Airport (OHD) in North Macedonia is another closer option, approximately 60 km away, but international connections are more limited.

By Car

Driving to Korçë is a popular and scenic way to arrive. Albania’s roads have improved significantly. The journey offers beautiful views, especially through mountainous terrain. You will drive on the right side of the road. Ensure your navigation system is updated. Korçë is well-connected by main roads from Tirana, Vlorë, and other Albanian cities. By Bus

The journey from Tirana takes around 3 to 3.5 hours. Korçë also has international bus connections. You can find direct buses to cities in Greece, like Athens and Thessaloniki.
