Tofsö, Södermanland – Exploring Sweden

Just a bit south of Trosa in the province of Södermanland lies the small settlement of Tofsö. This is a coastal area of eastern Sweden with the Baltic Sea as a neighbor. It consists mostly of vacation homes, but there are a few people who have turned this into their homes all year around. For others it is where you will find a beach and easy access to the water to swim.

A Short History of Tofsö

The first known written mentioning of Tofsö dates back to 1576. This area was earlier part of Västerljung Parish and the land was under the control of Tureholm Castle. The settlement of vacation homes developed here during the second half of the 20th century and was initially concentrated to the lands of the farmstead known as Lillsjötorp. The number of vacation homes has since grown and are today around 180, with a handful having year-around residents.

Things to Do and See

If you explore the area of Tofsö you will mostly find the vacation homes. But there are also a few of the older buildings that have been standing here for a few centuries now. What you will most likely look for is, however, one of the two beaches, either the one at the sea or the one at the small lake.

Havsbadet

Havsbadet is the beach at the shores of the Baltic Sea. It lies in a small protected bay and consists of a a small sandy beach. There are also small jetties and the beach is adjoined by a larger grass field where it is possible to enjoy the sun or play. Right in its vicinity is also the local marina with smaller boats.

Lake Lillsjön

Lake Lillsjön is a small lake in the southern part of Tofsö that is known for having a bit warmer water than the Baltic Sea. There is a small beach at its northern shores that also includes a few amenities.
