A bit inland from the Swedish western coast is the locality of Ödsmål. From here it is not far to the community of Talbo. It is along the shores of the lake Stora Hällungen and it has easy access to the surrounding nature. There are around 30 year-around inhabitants here, but more people arrive during the summer months.
A Short History of Talbo
Talbo was mentioned already in the first known household examination records for Ödsmål Parish. It was then, in the late 18th century, home to the widow Anna Håkansdotter as well as to the family of Berndt Martinsson and his wife Johanna Persdotter. The area has since developed into an area with more homes and in the last century also several vacation homes.
Things to Do and See
Nature is never far away and walking along the countryside roads can by itself be an adventure. In summer there is easy access to swimming in the nearby lake. In addition, the coast of Bohuslän, a part of Sweden’s western coast, is never far away. This means the possibility to explore the well-known islands of Orust and Tjörn as well as tourist destinations such as Fjällbacka, Marstrand, and Smögen.
Talbo Badplats
The lake Stora Hällungen has a couple of places for swimming. One of these is Talbo Badplats, which is a small beach with a larger green lawn for anyone enjoying the sunshine.
Talbo Gravfält
Talbo Gravfält is an area of 170 times 75 meters consisting of around 50 ancient remains. These include several burial mounds as well as standing stones.
Friskas Urds
Friskas Urds is a cave located to the northeast of the beach Talbo Badplats. The cave has a total of 41 meters of passageways and the local legend tells of Friskas and her gang of robbers that once had the caves as their lair.
Train Valley
The railway between Göteborg and Uddevalla passes through Talbo. Well, it actually even goes in a tunnel beneath the community. With the exception of the view out over the water of the lake, the view of the “train valley” is probably one of the most impressive sights in Talbo. With the railway framed by the green trees and the possibility of the sunset playing tricks in the sky makes it worth a short stop to enjoy the view.
How to Get to Talbo
- Flights: There are domestic and international routes to and from Göteborg Landvetter Airport (GOT), which is 79 kilometers away.
- Car: Kycklingedalen is along the E6, just north of Stenungsund and next to Ödsmål.
- Bus: Local and regional buses from Västtrafik connect Kycklingedalen with the surrounding region.
