Skekarsbo, Uppland – Exploring Sweden

Are you looking for a staircase with 94 steps? These steps would take you to the top of the Skekarsbo Tower, a watch tower within the Färnebofjärden National Park. Skekarsbo is close to Tärnsjö along the shores of Färnebofjärden, a part of the Lower Dalälven River. These lands lie within what was once the historical province of Uppland, today this is Heby Municipality in Uppsala County.

Skekarsbo is one of the gateways to Färnebofjärden National Park. It is the nature that most visitors come here to enjoy. Well, either that or they might be kids forced to join their parents.

Skekarsbo Watch Tower

Skekarsbo Watch Tower has 94 steps to reach its top deck. Once at the top. you will have climbed 20 meters and will be able to watch out over the treetops. This means a view out over the waters of Färnebofjärden, but also over almost endless forests.

Skekarsbo Rest Area

Close to the watch tower is a smaller rest stop with protection from the weather and with amenities such as toilets nearby. The rest area also includes the possibility for barbeques when the conditions allow it.

Färnebofjärden National Park

Färnebofjärden National Park was established as a protected area in 1998. It covers an area of more than 10.000 hectares within four municipalities split between four counties. The municipalities are Sala in Västmanland County, Heby in Uppsala County, Avesta in Dalarna County, and Sandviken in Gävleborg County.

There are several hiking trails throughout the park as well as rest areas where it is possible to stop for a barbeque or a fika break. Skekarbo is one of four official entrances to the park.

  • Flights: Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN) is 107 kilometers to the southeast.
  • Car: Skekarsbo is along countryside roads northwest of Tärnsjö.
