Rimforsa, Östergötland – Exploring Sweden

Rimforsa is a locality in Kinda Municipality in the region of Östergötland. It lies between the two lakes Järnlunden and Åsunden, along the Kinda Canal. It is today home to around 2.300 inhabitants and is connected to the rest of the region by Road 23 and the railway line known as Stångådalsbanan.

A Short History of Rimforsa

Rimforsa has been home to rural settlements for centuries. People here have traditionally been farming and using the rapids between the nearby lakes of Järnlunden and Åsunden. The rapids were a challenge for the transport of goods and people along the inland rivers and lakes. The Kinda Canal was completed in 1871 and it connected the Lakes and settlements between Lake Åsunden and Linköping with Lake Roxen and the much longer Göta Canal. This meant that it was possible to travel along the lakes and rivers from Rimforsa to the sea.

The next means of transport that was established in the area was the railway. It opened in 1902 with a lines between Linköping and Hultsfred. The railway changed the former farming and fishing settlement to a settlement with the railway at its center. The railway brought with it new services and residential areas were established.

Things to Do and See

It is the lake-and-river system of the area that is its main selling point. Nature reserves such as Borgarmon, Klevberget, and Hallstad Ängar lie nearby. The railway provides easy access to larger towns such as Kisa and Linköping, but then you will miss out on the nature. There are some small and simple services locally here.

Kinda Canal

This is in many ways the main attraction of Rimforsa. The canal here looks mostly like a river connecting to two large lakes. There are beaches as well as beautiful walking paths along its shores. Parts of Lake Järnlunden to the north are also part of Viggeby Nature Reserve and the smaller Hackelboön Nature Reserve.
