Pilkrog, Södermanland – Exploring Sweden

Pilkrog is a small settlement next to Järna in Södertälje Municipality in Stockholm County. This is a part of the historical province of Södermanland in eastern Sweden. The settlement is next to the former main road through Sweden, the road that has been replaced by the current Road E4. The road has been important for Pilkrog that for a long time had an inn for travelers.

A Short History of Pilkrog

Pilkrog has for centuries been home to the path connecting the Swedish capital Stockholm with the southern parts of the country. It is believed that there was an inn here already in the Middle Ages. What is known is that an inn was located here already in the 17th century. The old inn with its 19th century atmosphere still exists. You will, however, not find it in Pilkrog. The city of Eskilstuna acquired the inn in 1922 and moved it to the city.

Things to Do and See

It might not be possible to see the historical inn here, but there is more to explore before you continue to Eskilstuna. The nearby bay is a protected nature area and is known for its bird life. This is an easy way to get out in nature and even though the larger roads are nearby there is some tranquility you can enjoy here.


Pilkrogsviken is a protected nature area along the shores of the Baltic Sea. This bay is famous for its rich bird life. If you walk along the path from the main road you will reach a bird watching tower that offers a view of the bay and its inhabitants. In addition to birds you might also see a number of cows.

How to Get to Pilkrog

  • Flights: The nearest airport is Stockholm Skavsta Airport (NYO) 60 kilometers to the southwest. Sweden’s largest airport, Stockholm Arlanda (ARN), is 85 kilometers to the north.
  • Car: Pilkrog is on countryside roads to the east of Järna.
  • Bus: Buses from SL connect Pilkrog with the surrounding area.
  • Train: There is a train station in nearby Järna.
