Hölö, Södermanland – Exploring Sweden

Hölö is a locality in the historical province of Södermanland in eastern Sweden. It is today a part of Södertälje Municipality in Stockholm County and have around 1.600 inhabitants. The locality shares its name with the former parish and the parish church is located just a few kilometers to the east.


A Short History of Hölö

This was once a rural part of Hölö Parish with the parish church a few kilometers away. That changed in 1913 when the railway opened with a new station in the parish. The station received its name from the parish and a settlement began to form in its vicinity.The settlement continued to develop and gained additional fuel when the new highway, the E4, was built in the 1970’s. There are still older one-family homes in the center of Hölö that dates back to the 1910’s and 1920’s. The first larger residential constructions came in the 1950’s. The final end to the railway came in 1969 when the old station building was demolished.


Things to Do and See

There isn’t really a center here and most of the locality consists of residential areas. There is a smaller grocery store, the local pizzeria, as well as a school and a small football field. It is the surrounding area that is usually more interesting. This rural part of eastern Sweden have many lakes and the Baltic Sea is not far away.

To the southeast you will find the Tullgarn Palace, a royal summer home. There is also the towns of Södertälje and Trosa to explore in the vicinity. Smaller localities like Gnesta, Järna, and Vagnhärad are also nearby.


How to Get to Hölö

  • Flights: The nearest airport is Stockholm Skavsta Airport (NYO) 53 kilometers to the southwest. Sweden’s largest airport, Stockholm Arlanda (ARN), is 93 kilometers to the north.
  • Car: Hölö is along Road E4 between Södertälje and Vagnhärad.
  • Bus: Buses from SL connect Hölö with the surrounding area.
  • Train: There is a train station nearby, in both Järna and Vagnhärad.
